Options Choices and Careers Information

Over the coming weeks, we will be offering support to pupils due to make their subject choices as they prepare for next session. We are also supporting students who are due to leave school and embark upon the next steps in their career pathway. Pastoral teachers, Careers Advisers and Year Heads have already been in contact with students to provide some information and advice and this will be ongoing, but we would also like to direct parents and carers to a number of other opportunities where information and support is available.

For S2/3 pupils making subject choices:

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) have made a Youtube video available which talks pupils through 5 tips for making their subject choices.

SDS is also offering parents and carers an online opportunity to find out more about how they can help their child make their S2/3 subject choices for the Senior Phase. Scotland’s national skills agency has organised the virtual session on Thursday 25 February which will also give parents and carers information about accessing a wide range of SDS support.

This virtual event, which is from 6.30pm until 7.15pm, will also have a question and answer session.

To take part please register here.

Pupils have already completed a Microsoft Forms survey informing us of their intended choices. This has been used to provide the school with preliminary information to help ensure the best combination of subjects is on offer for pupils when they come to make their final options choices with the support of their Pastoral Teacher (S2 pupils) and Year Head (S3 pupils) later in March.

For S4-6 students and school leavers:

As is the case for pupils in S2 & 3, all students in S4 & 5 who are staying on at school will have been invited to complete a Microsoft Forms survey informing us of their intended choices. Again, this has been used to provide the school with preliminary information to help ensure the best combination of subjects is on offer for students when they come to make their final options choices with the support of their Pastoral Teacher. These Options Interviews will take place later in March/April this year to allow students the opportunity as far as possible to have had face-to-face learning and sufficient tracking information generated so that they can make an informed choice.

To ensure a varied curriculum is on offer, we also have existing partnerships with West College Scotland as well as consortium arrangements in place with other schools. While it is too early at this stage to consider which consortium arrangements might be necessary for pupils, we do have information that may be very useful for those considering Vocational Courses or Foundation apprenticeships that are provided by West College Scotland as part of their school curriculum.

For those continuing with S5/6 next year:

We would like to invite S4 & 5 pupils, parents and guardians to West College Scotland’s twilight information session on the 23rd of February at 6pm. (Online Team Meeting – Joining instructions below).

If you have some interest in Foundation Apprenticeships but would like to know more prior to joining the Teams session, Skills Development Scotland have provided some helpful information here.

The current booklet of Vocational Courses and Foundation Apprenticeships that will be available to S4/5 students choosing options this year is now available.

For school leavers:

For students ready to leave school and seeking a positive destination, we would like to make parents and students aware that Scottish Apprenticeship week is 1-5th March this year. Throughout the week there are likely to be updates posted on social media by SDS and local employers which we will be sharing via our school Twitter feed, so please make sure you are following us on @Trinityrenfrew to be kept informed. You can also go directly to the Apprentice.Scot where you can search for vacancies.

In the first instance, a series of webinars have been arranged for Monday 1st March. Please see the social media post below from Scottish National Apprenticeship Week’s media office with all the information:

We have teamed up with EY, GSK, QA, HSBC, PwC, Capgemini & RAF all of which will be delivering a 15-minute workshop / session on who they are, what they do and career opportunities for your students. There will be a big focus on Graduate Apprenticeships and Work Experience opportunities, many of which will be live and open for your students to apply to straight away!

Webinar Details:
